ABOUT
Mary Leathea
Pettway
Born and raised in Gee’s Bend, Mary Leathea Pettway’s journey into the world of quilting began with the humble task of threading needles for her relatives. It was not until her early twenties that she embarked on creating larger quilts, a craft that would later define her artistic legacy. Deeply influenced by her family’s resilience and resourcefulness, Mary prays to God for guidance and strength in her quilting endeavors. Her innovative use of materials is exemplified by her first quilt for her son, Andre, which incorporated repurposed denim from old jeans.
Mary Leathea Pettway's quilts have garnered international acclaim, being exhibited at prestigious venues such as the Nicelle Beauchene Gallery in New York City and the Alison Jacques Gallery in London. Additionally, she is featured in her niece Tangular Irby’s children's books, Pearl and Her Gee's Bend Quilt and Charles and His Gee's Bend Quilt, which celebrate the rich cultural heritage of their community.
